Plain

Language

Conferences

The Plain Language Association International holds an international conference every two years,

focusing on the standards, research, and practice of plain language and related professions.

These conferences bring together plain-language experts from around the world to present

the latest research and techniques. We invite professionals from all fields to attend and explore

the benefits of plain language in their work.

Conference 2007

Registration under way for PLAIN's sixth international conference

Oct. 11-14 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands

PLAIN's sixth international conference will show how governments can communicate effectively with

their populations. We expect 500 participants from all continents to exchange experiences,

show research results, and improve their competencies to write texts everybody can understand.

Our conference host is Bureautaal (Dutch), a communications consulting agency specializing

in plain language.

BureauTaal also provides plain-language training for writers and speakers.

Call for papers

In more than 50 workshops, presenters will offer more than 100 papers.

If you want to present a paper, please check the workshop your paper fits most closely with,

and send in your proposal. The deadline to submit proposals is June 15. More details on call for papers.

Getting to Amsterdam

Expedia.com is useful for comparing flight deals (Expedia.co.uk in the United Kingdom).

EasyJet.com is a cheap European airway that flies to Amsterdam.

Unfortunately, it doesn't go outside Europe, but if you plan to spend any time before or after

the conference in Europe, it's a cheap way of getting around (usually cheaper than the train).

Staying in Amsterdam

If you're on a tight budget, the Formule 1 hotel chain (again, throughout Europe) offers cheap rooms.

It's basic but clean and modern. Rooms in its Amsterdam hotel can serve up to three people at 40 Euros

a night (regardless of the number of people). One downside is that it's 15 km (9.3 miles) from

the conference site, but tour sponsor Wessel Visser tells us there is good public transport,

and taxis aren't too expensive.

If you'd like to check travelers' reviews of any other hotels in Amsterdam,

TripAdvisor (in the United States) is useful.
